Flesh and Stone is a side tale in Ghost of Tsushima.

Synopsis[]

Jin encounters a man chiseling stone by a broken statue. The man tells Jin to stay away, until he realizes that Jin is not a Mongol. He explains that the broken statue was a work of his father's. Jin recognizes the statue as one of the works of Master Izo, a master sculptor; and that the man in front of him is Master Izo's son. The man tells Jin that Mongols defaced the statue and killed his father. The man wants to restore the statue, but the tools he needs are in his father's house, which was taken by the Mongols. Jin volunteers to get the tools and avenge Master Izo's death.

Jin travels to a nearby home and kills the Mongols located there. Jin finds Master Izo, alive, and working on another statue. Jin informs Master Izo that his son thinks that he is dead, and invites Master Izo to see his son. Master Izo refuses, saying that a Mongol general admired his works and spared him, asking for a statue of Kublai Khan to be made. Master Izo chooses to stay to continue working on the Mongol statues. Jin demands in a forceful tone for Master Izo to gather his tools and to come with Jin. Master Izo reluctantly follows Jin's orders.

Jin and Master Izo return to a group of Mongols surrounding the broken statue. Jin defeats the Mongols, but shortly after, Master Izo catches sight of his son, dead. Master Izo mourns over his son, with Jin saying that he died defending the statue, his father's legacy. Master Izo says that he would forgo his legacy just to have his son back.

Master Izo holds a short conversation with Jin, saying the restoration is laborious, but the work reminds him of happier times. Jin visits the statue again later and sees it fully restored. Jin comments on the beauty of the statue. Master Izo reflects on his son saying the statue was his best work, though Master Izo did not agree back then. Event Entry
Rumored It has been too long since I've visited Master Izo, and now I hear his statues are being destroyed by Mongols. I won't let them destroy even one more.
Encountered There's a famous statue here somewhere. I haven't seen it in years, but my spirit would be refreshed by the sight of it.
Begin tale My heart ached when Master Izo's son told me the Mongols killed his father. I promised we would honor Master Izo's work by restoring the statue, but I could see it was vengeance for his father's death he truly desired. I wish for the same.
