Mongol invasion fleet at Komoda Beach
The Mongol Empire is the main antagonistic force in Ghost of Tsushima. Established by Genghis Khan, it grew to become the largest contiguous empire in history. By the year 1274, the empire, then ruled by Genghis's grandson Kublai, ruled over much of Eurasia. Seeking to conquer Japan as well, Kublai sent an army, led by his cousin Khotun, to invade Tsushima island.
The main objective of the invasion was to create a base of operations for the Mongols to then move into mainland Japan. Although the samurai fought bravely at Komoda Beach, they were defeated by the Mongol's powerful cavalry, hwachas, naval artillery, and gunpowder. The samurai of Tsushima were slaughtered by overwhelming enemy numbers with the exception of the jito Lord Shimura, who became a prisoner, and Jin Sakai, rescued by local thief Yuna. After the battle at Komoda, the Mongols swiftly conquered the entirety of the island. At around the same time, a separate force of Mongols led by Ankhsar Khatun of the Eagle Tribe began to invade the nearby island of Iki.
Spurred on by his desire to rescue his uncle Shimura, Jin soon became a leader of Tsushima's resistance, destroying several Mongol camps and taking back Castle Kaneda and Castle Shimura. However, he earned the ire of several prominent samurai, including Shimura and the Shogun himself, for employing dishonorable tactics in combat. In the end, Khotun Khan was slain by Jin and the Mongol army was forced to retreat.

- Khunbish — Second-in-command of the Eagle Tribe on Iki. Killed by Jin in a duel.
- Temuge — General. He led forces during the siege against Yarikawa. Killed by Jin in a duel.
- Altan — Warlord. In charge of terrorizing Otsuna Prefecture. Killed by Jin in a duel.
- Bartu — General. Leader of a Mongol camp in Kin Prefecture. Killed by Jin in a duel.
- Dogshin — General. Leader of a Mongol camp in Jogaku Prefecture. Killed by Jin in a duel.
- Dogar — Warlord. He led Mongols in an attack at Ogawa Dojo. Killed by Jin in a duel.
- Harunori — Warlord. Leader of Azamo Bay invasion forces. Killed by Jin in a duel.
- Bataar — General. He led Mongols during a siege against Komatsu Forge. Killed by Jin.
- Nugai — General. Leader of a Mongol camp in Tsutsu Prefecture. Killed by Jin.
Turncoats
- Ryuzo — Leader of the Straw Hats. He betrayed the samurai in order to have the Straw Hats survive the invasion but eventually tried to return to Jin's side after Taka's death. Killed by Jin at Castle Shimura.
- Tomoe - Sensei Ishikawa's former student. A large number of Mongols were trained by her in archery.
