The Proud Do Not Endure (Yuriko Tale 1 of 2) is a side tale during Act 2: Retake Castle Shimura.

Synopsis[]

Yuriko thinks she remembers the plants to make another type of dart for Jin Sakai's blowgun that are possibly at a nearby cemetery, so she and Jin take a ride towards Kubara Ridge. After defeating the Mongols that set-up camp at the cemetery, Yuriko realizes the plants are not at this cemetery, but probably at another one, belonging to his great-aunt's family, so they mount their horses again. Yuriko tells the story of how Kazumasa Sakai's men became scared of him after he hunted down some ronin that had ambushed him – mistaking the senior Sakai for a "demon of the forest." They stop to rest at Omi Lake, where Yuriko recalls a memory about Jin's mother. After a short while, Jin prompts Yuriko to keep moving as it might not be too safe to linger. When Jin and Yuriko get to the next cemetery, he collects three (3) lilies. Yuriko confesses she doesn't want their time together to end and asks him to accompany her to Shimura Cemetery with a view of the waterfall. Yuriko mistakenly calls him “Kazumasa,” and makes up for her lack of clarity by saying that Jin rides with his father's grace – Kazumasa taught her how to ride a horse. Of course, Mongols have taken over another camp, so Yuriko decides to make the new poison for Jin to test on the enemy: Hallucination Darts. This type of dart causes madness, making it so that the enemies will “turn on each other like wild beasts.” After Jin watches the effects of the new darts and defeats the remaining enemies, they continue their ride towards Shimura Cemetery, with Yuriko's mind still slipping away into thinking she is riding with his father. They are relieved to find the war hasn't touched the burial site and they sit down to write a Haiku (reflecting on impermanence). As the day comes to a close, Yuriko recalls one more memory: Kazumasa used to say that Lord Shimura was too concerned with that castle – that he equated strength with the immovable, like a mountain. Yuriko points out the waterfall – how all of that immovable rock yields to the water – the strength we need is all around us. The proud do not endure, the greatest of us fall in the end.
