The Tale of Lord Shimura is the final tale of Act 3: Kill the Khan, and the final tale of the main story campaign Jin's Journey.

Synopsis[]

The Khan is defeated, but I have one last personal matter to deal with…. Lord Shimura has asked me to meet him under the red-leafed tree by Omi Lake. I need to face him. I won’t keep running.
― Jin

Objectives[]

  • Travel to the old sparring circle by Omi Lake
  • Wait on the dock for your uncle
  • Ride with Lord Shimura
  • Speak with the man next to his cart
  • Help push the wagon out of the mud
  • Mount your horse again and continue your ride with your uncle
  • Compose your (final) Haiku
  • Duel Lord Shimura
  • Decide Lord Shimura's fate
    • L2 to Kill (Honor his wish for a warrior's death)
    • R2 to Spare (let him live and walk away)
  • After the cutscene, look around your new house and investigate the various items for a brief trip down memory lane
  • Speak with Yuna outside

Journal Entry[]

I have met Lord Shimura by Omi Lake, as he requested. We have much to talk about. Whatever the future brings, I will see this through. I owe him that much.
― Jin

Trivia[]

  • After waiting at the sparring circle at the shores of Omi Lake, Jin Sakai's armor will automatically switch to the Ronin Attire. Until the Tale is concluded, the player is unable to change out of the attire.
  • This Tale rather ironically realizes Ryuzo's assumption in the flashback during the Heart of the Jito to be true: in order to start his own family, Lord Shimura will have to remove Jin first.
    • Adding to the irony, Jin wears the armor given to him by Ryuzo throughout the Tale, even when he duels Lord Shimura.
  • Depending on which ending the player chooses, Jin's new home and the dye color the player receives for the Ghost Armor will differ. Beyond these two, there is no difference than the dialogue Jin has with Yuna at the end of this Tale.
    • Choosing the "Spare" ending has Jin's new home be located at Tradition's End, while receiving the red Vow of Vengeance dye color for the Ghost Armor.
    • Choosing the "Kill" ending has Jin's new home be located at Dawn Refuge, while receiving the white Righteous Punishment dye color for the Ghost Armor.
  • It is widely believed that the "Spare" ending is considered to be the proper "Ghost" ending as sparing Lord Shimura against his honor-driven wish is more in tune with Jin's denouncement of the Samurai code, while the "Kill" ending is considered to be the "Samurai" ending as Jin bends to honor one more time to grant Lord Shimura his honorable death. Whether or not this is true is still up for debate.
    • Daisuke Tsuji, the voice actor and face model of Jin Sakai, chose the "Spare" ending in his publicly streamed playthrough of the game.
    • Game director Nate Fox confirmed the "Spare" ending as the true canon ending, but also revealed he personally prefers the "Kill" ending[1].
  • Unlike other duels, Lord Shimura will not finish Jin off if he loses.
  • It's actually possible to get both the Vow of Vengeance and Righteous Punishment dyes on the same save file, without playing through New Game+, but the opportunity is very easy to miss. After making his choice and watching the credits roll, Jin will be at his new hideout, clad in his Ghost Armor with the corresponding new dye applied. Instead of leaving the hideout, immediately pause the game and navigate to the Journal. Go into Jin's Journey and Abandon the tale. Jin will be transported just outside of Omi Village, as if he never started the tale, but he won't lose the dye he obtained. Play through The Tale of Lord Shimura once again, and choose the other ending. After the credits roll, Jin will be at this ending's hideout, but now he has the Ghost Armor dyes from both endings.
